Reading the payment

The monthly payment is fixed for the life of a standard personal loan: it covers that month's interest first, and the rest reduces the balance, so early payments are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal.Total interest is what the loan costs you on top of the amount borrowed. A longer term shrinks the payment but grows that cost — on a large loan at a high APR the difference between 36 and 60 months runs into the thousands. For a custom amount, APR or fee, use the personal loan calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What APR do these payments assume?
12.5% APR over 60 months, roughly the middle of the personal-loan market for fair-to-good credit and the most common term. Each amount's own page shows the full table from 8% to 36% APR over 2 to 5 years.
Is there an origination fee in these figures?
No. Many lenders charge 1–8% of the amount, deducted upfront or added to the balance. Add it to the amount borrowed before reading the table, or use the origination-fee field on the main personal loan calculator.
Which term should I pick?
The shortest one whose monthly payment you can comfortably afford. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest — often substantially at higher APRs.
How accurate are these numbers?
The payment formula is exact for a fixed-rate fully-amortizing loan. Your actual quote depends on the lender's APR, any fee, and the exact term. Variable-rate loans and lender-specific rounding are not modelled.
